5 Iconic Olympic Moments Every Millennial Will Remember

We are just a few days in to the 2018 Winter Olympics taking place in PyeongChang, South Korea. I’ve been glued to my television watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony, figure skating, skiing, luge and snowboarding. Sports that I have not given one thought to since the last Olympics are now suddenly all I care about. Curling, anyone? I love it!

Celebrating Team U.S.A. and watching the inspiring stories of all of these athletes got me thinking back on some of the Olympic games from the 80s and 90s. Friends, families, strangers, all gathered around the television set to cheer for our country and follow some of the most captivating stories from the games. Good times! For any Millennial, the following five Olympic events are legendary. Get ready to wave that American flag! Read more

It’s Only a Happy Meal Because Of the Toy

I have no answer for you. I cannot tell you why. There is no reason for why my parents chose to keep and protect a plastic bin full of old, fast-food restaurant kid’s meal toys. I am not sure if they thought my brother and I would want to pass them on to our children or if they considered the toys may be worth money someday or maybe they thought they could be used as currency in a future apocalypse. Though I cannot fathom the reason behind them keeping such a random and weird artifact from my childhood, I am certainly glad they did.

During a recent visit home, my dad brought out this box of ancient artifacts and we went through them for a old-times-sake. It was entertaining and heartwarming and puzzling all at the same time. Some toys I remembered fondly, some toys I can’t even believe were made and some toys I have absolutely no idea who they heck they are. I pulled some of the most entertaining toys from the box, did a little bit of research on each one and wanted to share my findings with you all in hopes that it will bring back sweet memories of sitting in the drive-thru, smelling that glorious scent of french fries and anxiously awaiting the surprise of what toy would be including with your meal. Bon appetite and enjoy! Read more

15 Words & Phrases that Need to Make a Comeback

It’s incredible how identifying certain vocabulary is, isn’t it? You can easily tell if someone is from the South the minute they say “ya’ll” instead of “you guys.” You can notice if someone is from England if they call an elevator a “lift.” You can also recognize if you’re talking to someone younger if they say “hashtag insert anything here.” #nojudgement  Believe it or not, you can also tell if someone grew up in the 80s and 90s by certain words and phrases they use. Now, you don’t hear them very often nowadays, but I am hoping that together we can change all that. Can we just agree that the slang from when we were kids was the greatest? Ok, now that that’s out of the way, let’s start a movement and recirculate these epic terms throughout society today. If we can replace just one #YOLO with a Cowabunga, I will be one happy lady.

Can’t remember all the key words and phrases from the 80s and 90s? Need a reminder? You got it, dude. Here are 15 Words and Phrases from back in the day that are desperately in need of a comeback. Read more

AIM is Signing Off After 20 Years

Boy, have I got a not-so-shocking, yet still sad announcement for ya’ll. On December 15, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) will no longer be available for users, according to TechCrunch.com. *gasp* The chat service, which debuted in 1997, will no longer be supported on any operating system. Can you all believe AIM has been around for 20 years? While I haven’t used the platform in over 14 years probably, I can’t help but be dismayed by its departure. For most of us, I am sure AIM was our first “chat” experience online. Before we say goodbye, let’s take a look back at AIM and the influence it had on our typing skills, connection with people via the internet and unforgettable screen names. Read more

Holiday Wish Lists

This past weekend, I celebrated Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the official start of the holiday season with my family. We laughed, cooked, ate way too much food and went Black Friday shopping. Yes, we are those crazy people among the crowds of shoppers vying for a killer deal at 5 a.m. Part of the preparation for Black Friday shopping includes going through the newspaper, scouring the ads and planning which stores and which deals are a top priority. I am happy to report that my husband and I survived Black Friday (it was actually a relatively pleasant experience) and walked away with a Smart T.V., wireless printer, rice cooker and wet/dry vacuum cleaner all at amazing deals. We had a great weekend!

While planning for our shopping escapade, thumbing through the ads brought back memories from my childhood of putting together my holiday wish list. Was there anything that a kid put more thought into than making a list of toys to request for the holiday season? Certainly not school work. Certainly not chores. The process of creating a holiday wish list was quite involved. I still remember all the steps I took to ensure there was no question about what I wanted to see under the tree on Christmas morning. There are two kinds of people during the holidays; those that love Christmas shopping and those that hate Christmas shopping. I am one of the former – it is one of my favorite things about the holidays! Throughout the year, I pay close attention to things my friends and family seem fond of and grab it then and there, holding it for Christmas so I can see their delight when they open the gift. I find a lot of joy in giving others thoughtful and creative presents. Santa Claus basically has my dream job. Out of all the holiday shopping I do, though, nothing gets me more excited than picking out the perfect stocking gifts. Most people don’t ask for specific stocking gifts, which gives me great creative freedom. That, and the challenge of sticking to a relatively low price point makes stocking shopping a favorite holiday pastime of mine. I must admit, I am pretty good at it, too.

One thing I love adding to my loved ones’ stockings is toys, games and items from the past that remind them of their youth. Read more
