15 Words & Phrases that Need to Make a Comeback

It’s incredible how identifying certain vocabulary is, isn’t it? You can easily tell if someone is from the South the minute they say “ya’ll” instead of “you guys.” You can notice if someone is from England if they call an elevator a “lift.” You can also recognize if you’re talking to someone younger if they say “hashtag insert anything here.” #nojudgement  Believe it or not, you can also tell if someone grew up in the 80s and 90s by certain words and phrases they use. Now, you don’t hear them very often nowadays, but I am hoping that together we can change all that. Can we just agree that the slang from when we were kids was the greatest? Ok, now that that’s out of the way, let’s start a movement and recirculate these epic terms throughout society today. If we can replace just one #YOLO with a Cowabunga, I will be one happy lady.

Can’t remember all the key words and phrases from the 80s and 90s? Need a reminder? You got it, dude. Here are 15 Words and Phrases from back in the day that are desperately in need of a comeback.

TALK TO THE HAND

Definition:

I am not trying to listen to your nonsense right now, so please tell it to my hand so I don’t have to hear it.

Example in a sentence:

“Jill, if you’re trying to tell me that a Snack Pack is better than Dunkaroos, you can talk to the hand.”

Synonyms:

Get out of my face, whatever

 

AS IF!

Definition:

Disbelief, inability to fathom as a reality

Example in a sentence:

“You think Lance Bass is gay? As if!”

Synonyms:

Yeah right, no way

 

ALL THAT AND A BAG OF CHIPS

Definition:

Something or someone with the complete package, plus a little something extra.

Example in a sentence:

The Nintendo 64 system and collection of games is all that and a bag of chips.”

Synonyms:

Ultimate, the best of the best, number one

 

PSYCHE!

Definition:

I tricked you. What I just said was not actually the truth.

Example in a sentence:

The recent Ghostbusters remake was so much better than the original movie that came out in 1984… Psyche!”

Synonyms:

Kidding, just playing, only messing with you

 

EAT MY SHORTS

Definition:

Expression for dismissal when someone has offended you greatly. Originally Bart Simpson’s signature phrase.

Example in a sentence:

You spoiled the ending of the latest Babysitters Club book! Eat my shorts!”

Synonyms:

Screw you, drop dead, leave me alone

 

DON’T HAVE A COW, MAN

Definition:

Please calm down. The current state is not as catastrophic as you believe it to be.

Example in a sentence:

“This K.B. Toys may be sold out of Power Ranger action figures, but there are still plenty of other places selling them. Don’t have a cow, man.”

Synonyms:

Calm yourself, chill out, relax

 

COWABUNGA!

Definition:

A expression of exuberance and excitement

Example in a sentence:

I am going to ride my bike down this massive hill with no hands and no helmet. Cowabunga!”

Synonyms:

Geronimo, YOLO, woo hoo

 

BODACIOUS

Definition:

Uncommonly attractive or worthy of admiration

Example in a sentence:

“That Fly Girl from In Living Color, Jennifer Lopez, has a bodacious body.”

Synonyms:

Banging, bootylicious, incredible

 

TUBULAR

Definition:

Superb or excellent. Originally used by surfers and then Valley Girls.

Example in a sentence:

Awesome, amazing, remarkable

 

RADICAL

Definition:

New, innovative and especially impressive

Example in a sentence:

“I just saw Darren roller blade backwards on the skate rink and it was radical.”

Unreal, incredible, astonishing

 

RALPH

Definition:

To vomit or empty one’s stomach

Example in a sentence:

If you mix Surge, Tab cola and Slice together in your fountain beverage, you are surely going to ralph.”

GRODY

Definition:

Fowl, revolting or disgusting

Example in a sentenace:

Gross, nasty, vile

 

GAG ME WITH A SPOON

Definition:

Something so revolting that one would need to induce sickness to accurately display his/her feelings about it

Don’t make me sick, I am disgusted

 

HARSH

Definition:

Much more severe than necessary

Example in a sentence:

“My parents are so harsh for grounding me just for making a long-distance phone call without their permission.”

Uncalled for, savage, brutal

 

BIG TIME

Definition:

To the maximum or an extreme

Example in a sentence:

“Dana doesn’t just like me as a friend, she likes me big time.”

Synonyms:

Extra, to the max, a lot
